When Life Shifts All at Once
I recently shared my story of navigating divorce. But a short time after sharing that news, life took another sharp, unexpected turn.
You all may recall that last spring, I moved my 9-5 work life to a new company. It was a very positive change for me — I got to work from home, and my work/life balance was better than ever.
But a few short months after transitioning, my department at my new job was eliminated and I found myself unemployed. The news was cold and sudden, and the weight was crushing. The timing was, quite honestly, horrific. And for a short while, I forgot everything I know — and teach! — about having a positive money mindset.
The Worst-Case Scenario of Navigating Unemployment Alongside Divorce
Losing a job is hard enough. Navigating divorce is hard enough. Facing both simultaneously has forced me to rethink everything — my security, my daily decisions, and the way I relate to money. It also reminded me of something I often tell my clients: a budget isn’t just numbers on a page. It’s a living reflection of your life. And life has a way of changing without warning.
Mindset Matters Too
What surprised me most was not just the logistical reshuffling, but the emotional weight. A job loss during divorce hits deep. I find myself questioning my identity, stability, and self-worth tangled with blank spreadsheets and continuing bills.
If you’re in a similar place, I want you to know it’s okay if you feel unsteady. It’s okay if you need time. Your worth is not measured by how quickly you bounce back. Give yourself permission to move slowly, to breathe, and to rebuild piece by piece.
Closing Thoughts
A job change can feel like the rug has been pulled out from under you — especially when it collides with other life upheavals. But here’s what I’ve learned: your budget can bend and flex with you. It isn’t a rigid cage; it’s a support system. When life resets, your money plan can reset, too.
If you’re in the middle of your own transition, whether it’s a new job, a layoff, or another kind of life change, you’re not alone. Keep showing up for yourself. Keep taking small, steady steps. The path forward is built one decision at a time.
